How to Properly Layer the Products in Your Daily Skincare Routine

Woman following daily skincare routine

Have you ever found yourself reading a glowing review of a skincare product – one that you’ve already been using for weeks in your daily skincare routine – only to wonder why you haven’t also been experiencing the same game-changing results?

There could be a few reasons for this. However, one of the most common is making mistakes when it comes to the order in which you apply your products. Unless you get this right, the products that you use won’t be as effective as they otherwise could have been.

So, what’s the right order? How should you be layering the products in your daily skincare routine? Stick with Nubi – we’re about to explain!

Go From Lightest to Heaviest

Skincare can sometimes seem like an overly complicated minefield. However, this doesn’t need to be the case when it comes to layering the products in your daily skincare routine.

Instead, there’s one simple “rule” that holds true in most cases; after cleansing your face, start with your lightest product and work your way up, finishing with your thickest and heaviest.

This way, the lightweight products will be able to easily penetrate your skin, without the thicker products blocking their way. Saving the thickest for last will also help to lock in all of the other, lighter, products that you’ve already applied.

The Correct Order for Your Daily Skincare Routine

Still feeling a little confused?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you! Here’s a simple daily skincare routine, in the correct order, that you can follow:

Step 1: Start With a Cleanser

As we mentioned earlier, your daily skincare routine doesn’t really get started until after your skin is cleansed. This is such a vital step. Miss it out and your skincare products won’t be able to pass through the dirt, oil, and other impurities that have settled onto the surface of your skin. The result? They won’t be able to work effectively, no matter how well you layer them.

For the perfect start to your daily routine, check out Nubi’s Foaming Cleanser. While foaming cleansers often have the rep of being harsh on the skin, this one feels ultra-gentle and super refreshing. Since we’ve infused it with orange peel oil, it will also have a brightening and rejuvenating effect on your appearance, leaving your skin looking radiant.

Step 2: Next Comes Your Toner

While some people may say that a toner isn’t necessary, we would say…ignore them! Sure, it may not be as essential as a cleanser. However, if you want your skin to feel fully prepped to absorb the full potency of your other skincare products, then a toner is a must.

We would recommend going with Nubi’s Purifying Toner. This hydrating formula contains everything that your skin needs to feel balanced and strengthened. It’s packed with hyaluronic acid and glycerin to plump up and hydrate your complexion, niacinamide to reduce the look of discoloration, allantoin to leave your skin feeling soothed, and sea minerals to round off the nutrient-dense makeup of this formula.

Step 3: Essences, Serums, and Other Treatments

Once you’re done toning, you can move on to any essences, serums, or other treatments that you use. Now, this is where it can get complicated. So, if you’re a skincare newbie, we’d recommend starting off with just one of these products before adding more to your daily skincare routine.

But what do you do if you have multiple serums and treatments to apply?

This is where the “lightest to heaviest” rule comes into play. Essences tend to be very water-like, so these usually go first, whereas serums are slightly thicker and silkier, so they would go next.

What should you do if you have two serums that are similar in consistency? Pick the one that has the highest concentration of active ingredients and apply that first. This way, those potent ingredients will have more direct contact with your skin cells than the serum you apply next.

However, there’s an exception to this rule…

If you’re using any acne treatments, or any other medicated products to treat specific skin concerns, these should be applied before any essences or serums. It’s important for these ingredients to be allowed to work without having to fight through any others. Wait until your skin has fully absorbed your treatment before moving on to a serum, or to the rest of your daily skincare routine.

Step 4: Finish Up With a Moisturizer

A good moisturizer is a must in any daily skincare routine, and our favorite is the Nubi Facial Day Moisturizer. These glossy jars contain an ultra-lightweight, whipped moisturizer that feels weightless yet deeply hydrating when applied.

It’s a formula that can instantly relieve dryness while minimizing the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. It contains a few different plant oils, plus glycerin, one of the best humectants out there. It boasts powerful moisture-binding properties that leave the skin looking full and volumized.

Step 5: Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen

Did you know that up to 80% of visible facial aging is caused by UV exposure? This figure may seem shocking to some. This is especially the case when you consider the fact that the appearance of your fine lines and wrinkles could have been prevented had you been more diligent about sunscreen in your youth.

Fortunately, it’s never too late to start making improvements. So, if you’re following this daily skincare routine in the morning, always finish off with a sunscreen. Choose a broad-spectrum formula, as this will protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Go for a minimum SPF of 30, or higher if you have particularly sensitive skin.

Ideally, pick a sunscreen that’s easy to fit into your handbag. In order to provide the best protection, any sunscreen, no matter how good it may be, will need to be reapplied every 2-3 hours. And yes, you’ll need to do this in the winter months too! UV rays are no joke – they’re present, and damaging, year-round.

What About a Daily Skincare Routine for Your Body?

Nubi Body Butter

We’ve covered your face, but what about a daily skincare routine for the rest of your body?

Let’s start with your neck and chest. The skin here is relatively thin and delicate, just like the skin on your face. So, we’d recommend treating this area differently than the rest of your body. Give it the same care and products that you use on your face. This way, you’ll be able to prevent the appearance of neck wrinkles and chest lines for as long as possible.

However, when it comes to the rest of your body, things are a little different. The skin here is quite thick and tough. It’s also not subject to the same amount of UV exposure as your face (with the exception of your hands, but we’ll get to them soon!). As a result, it doesn’t need the same cocktail of concentrated ingredients that your face requires.

Instead, give your body a good cleanse in the shower with a gentle body wash. Keep your shower temperature at lukewarm, rather than hot. This way, you’ll be preserving the natural oils on your skin, rather than stripping it dry.

Once you step out of the shower, lightly pat yourself down with a soft towel. Then, apply a generous layer of the Deep Body Butter from Nubi. This rich, buttery, decadent blend will dive deep down into your skin to quench your skin cells from head to toe.

Giving Your Hands Some Extra Love

As we mentioned, your hands tend to be subjected to more UV damage than the rest of your body. The skin here also has to deal with so much wear and tear. Think about everything that your hands do throughout the day, along with the chemicals that it comes into contact with. All of this affects your skin.

So, to give your hands some extra TLC, turn your attention to the Nubi Hand & Body Cream. It’s a lightweight formula in a handy little tube, meaning that you can take it anywhere. It absorbs quickly into the skin too, so you can get back to your daily activities without having to deal with hands that feel greasy.

Other Ways to Make Your Daily Skincare Routine More Effective

While those are the basic steps when it comes to your daily skincare routine, adding in a few weekly extras can make that foundation even stronger…

Regular Exfoliation

Exfoliation is a must, no matter your skin type. Even if you cleanse daily, which you should be doing, exfoliation takes things deeper. It’ll clear out debris from deep within your pores, reducing the appearance of roughness, dullness, and even acne breakouts.

Both your face and your body need to be exfoliated regularly. How often you do so depends on your skin type. Those with dry or sensitive skin may only need to exfoliate weekly, while those with oily, acne-prone skin may need to exfoliate 2-3 times a week.

That said, no matter your skin type, turn to the Nubi Facial Peeling for all of your facial exfoliation needs. It’s a little different from other physical exfoliants because of how non-abrasive it is. However, it’s still extremely effective at ridding the face of dead skin cells.

As we discussed earlier, the skin on your body needs something a little stronger and tougher. So, for this, we’d recommend Nubi’s Exfoliating Body Scrub. Designed to be used 2-3 times a week, this salt-based scrub will slough away the look of dryness and roughness to reveal an appearance that’s radiantly glowing.

Mask Up

Face masks are a great way to enhance your complexion. Most masks are targeted toward a specific skin concern, meaning that they’re also ideal for truly customizing your routine.

Whether you go for sheet masks, gel masks, creamy masks, or anything else, getting into the routine of weekly masking (or even multi-masking) will do your skin the world of good.

Tap, Don’t Rub

While this hasn’t been scientifically proven in any way, anecdotal evidence backs up the fact that skincare products can sometimes feel more effective if they’re tapped into the skin, rather than rubbed.

Why is this?

Well, the motion of tapping supposedly helps to encourage product absorption. It also gives circulation a boost, which leaves the face looking glowy.

On the other hand, rubbing can stretch and pull at your skin. This can exacerbate the look of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. So, as far as we can see, tapping instead of rubbing is a no-brainer!

Summary

While understanding the order of a daily skincare routine can seem a little confusing at first, it’s actually pretty simple. Just remember the “lightest to heaviest” rule whenever you’re feeling unsure and you’ll be golden.
