There are so many frizz-fighting hair care products out there. From gels to creams to masks, just about every hair pro will have their own recommended must-tries, yet, for many people, these simply don’t make enough of a difference.

If you’re looking for a way to de-frizz your locks without having to add to your growing stash of anti-frizz hair products, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading as Nubi shares the secret to frizz-free hair that not enough people are talking about!

So, What’s the Secret?

We’re not arguing with the fact that certain hair care products are a must if you’re hoping to keep frizz away in the long term. One of the main contributing factors to frizz is a lack of moisture. Therefore, using hair care products that add moisture back into your strands can go a long way in helping with frizzy locks.

With that said, restoring your hair’s moisture levels can take a while. But with our secret? You’ll be able to achieve a frizz-free finish in no time…

It all comes down to how you blow dry your hair. Even the frizziest and fluffiest of manes can be turned smooth and sleek with the right blow-drying tools and techniques.

Ready to find out more? Here’s everything you need to know:

It All Starts With the Right Blow Dryer

The Blow Me Away Hairdryer

All of the tips and techniques in the world aren’t going to help you if you aren’t using a good blow dryer. Your frizz-free future hinges on this, so pick wisely.

Ideally, you want a blow dryer with a high-wattage motor. This indicates a powerful airflow, meaning a faster drying time. Look for a model with a wattage of at least 2000. Adjustable temperatures are a must too, as are removable concentrator nozzles. Different speed settings can be helpful too.

One hairdryer that checks all of the boxes is the Nubi Blow Me Away. This highly versatile hairdryer is one that even the professionals love. Its wide range of features makes this the perfect tool to have in your arsenal if your aim is to achieve a mane that looks smooth and frizz-free.

Heat Protectant is a Must

While a lack of moisture is the main cause of frizz, damage to your hair will cause frizz to appear too. When your hair is exposed to heat without any form of protection, this can lead to your hair cuticles, meaning the outer layers of each strand, lifting up. This gives the hair an uneven and frizzy appearance.

With blow drying being a form of heat exposure, it’s essential that you use a heat protectant before reaching for your hairdryer. There are so many different types out there but try to pick one that’s also hydrating, enabling you to tackle your frizz in more than one way.

Wait Until Your Hair is 70-80% Dry

Blow drying soaking wet hair is the last thing that you should do. This greatly increases your chances of damaging your hair since your hair will be exposed to the heat from your hair dryer for so much longer.

Of course, there’s no point blow drying dry hair either. Instead, wait until your hair is about 70-80% dry before turning to your hair dryer.

Section Your Hair

While you might be tempted to skip this step, spending a minute or two sectioning your hair before you begin blow drying it can make a huge difference. It will allow you to focus on fully drying one section at a time. In the end, this will reduce both drying time and frizz since you won’t be running your hair dryer over the same section of hair time and time again.

Sectioning clips can be very useful for this. Start by sectioning off the hair at the top of your crown. Then, split the rest of your hair into three or four sections, depending on how thick your hair is.

Turn the Heat Down

As we mentioned earlier, the Nubi Blow Me Away hair dryer has adjustable heat settings. Why does this matter? Because high heat isn’t necessarily the best way to go.

While many are tempted to immediately flick to the highest heat setting in an attempt to blow dry their strands as quickly as possible, intense heat, as you know, leads to damage. This then causes frizz.

Instead, using a lower heat setting when blow-drying your hair can be much more beneficial. Sure, it may take a few minutes longer but a lower heat will prevent your hair cuticles from lifting in a way that can significantly reduce frizz.

Keep a Safe Distance

Another key factor in keeping frizz at bay is ensuring that you don’t hold your hairdryer too close to your hair. Keeping those hair cuticles flat and smooth needs to be a priority, which doesn’t happen unless your hairdryer remains at a safe distance from your strands.

How close is too close?

One study found that 15cm is the ideal distance. In fact, keeping your hairdryer 15cm away from your hair while ensuring that it’s continuously in motion (as opposed to focusing it on one area of your hair) can actually be a safer way to dry your locks than air drying. This method, assuming you’re using a lower heat setting too, encourages your hair to retain moisture. As you know, hair that has plenty of moisture is less likely to be frizzy!

Direction is Everything

We’ve already mentioned how important it is to encourage your hair cuticles to lie flat if you want to prevent frizz. The tips above will help with that but they won’t be much use if you then blow dry your hair in the wrong direction.

Ideally, you want to blow dry your hair in the direction that it grows. This way, you’ll be pushing your hair cuticles down. If you go at them from the opposite side, you’ll only be forcing them backward. This then leads to frizz.

So, keep your hairdryer pointed downward, starting at your scalp and moving your way down to the end of that section of hair. Don’t be tempted to flip your hair upside down while you blow dry it either as this only blasts your hair cuticles from the wrong direction.

If your hairdryer comes with concentrator nozzles, like the Nubi one does, make sure that you use them! These focus the airflow that’s released from your blow dryer. This makes it much easier to direct the flow of air downward while you work.

Use the Right Brush

While you may think that any hairbrush will be able to give you the frizz-free look you’re hoping for, this isn’t the case. Your choice of brush is very important…

Ceramic tends to be the preferred option among the pros. This is down to how they provide even heat distribution, which helps to lay the hair cuticles down flatter.

Boar bristle is also popular. These brushes are known for being great at spreading the oil produced by the scalp down each strand of hair. This helps to naturally moisturize your hair, leaving your strands less likely to frizz.

If you can’t decide between them, try both! Start with a boar bristle round brush before finishing with a ceramic paddle brush, or vice versa. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different brushes to see which works best for your hair.

Don’t Touch Hot Hair

Ever heard the saying, “Hot hair is like wet paint”? If not, keep it in mind each time you blow dry your hair!

Each time you touch your freshly-dried strands, you’ll essentially be ‘smudging’ the end result, disrupting the newly formed definition of your hair. The more you touch it, the more likely you are to end up with frizz – the very thing you’re working to avoid!

So, wait until your hair has fully cooled down before your fingers go anywhere near it. If your hairdryer has a cool shot function, like the Nubi model does, this only takes a few seconds!

Make Sure That Your Hair is 100% Dry

Another frizz-inducing mistake that many people make is not ensuring that each and every strand of hair is fully dry before they put their hairdryer away. Even the smallest amount of water left in your strands will cause your hair cuticles to swell, meaning that frizz won’t be far away.

Sectioning your hair will help to ensure thorough drying. You could also try using a comb to lift different areas of your hair to check that there isn’t any lingering dampness.

Making it Last

After putting all of that hard work in and finally achieving a frizz-free finish, it goes without saying that you’ll want your new ‘do to last for as long as possible!

One way to go about this is to spritz your hair with a setting spray once you’re done blow-drying. This will help to lock your strands in place, making them less likely to frizz up.

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can help in a big way too. The friction created each time your hair rubs against your pillow will quickly cause frizzy strands. Silk minimizes this to a huge degree, helping to maintain smoothness.

Achieving a Frizz-Free Mane

There’s no denying that addressing the underlying cause of your frizz is vital if you want healthy-looking hair in the long run. If a lack of moisture is the issue, focus on hydration, whereas frizz that’s caused by damage is a sign that your strands need even more TLC.

However, if you’re trying to achieve a smooth and frizz-free look in the meantime, your blow dryer won’t let you down. Follow all of the steps that we’ve detailed above and your strands will look sleeker than they ever have before!
