9 Steps to Achieving Smoother, Frizz-Free Hair

before after hair

Tired of spending ages trying to style your hair to sleek perfection only to end up with a fluffy halo around your head not long after? It’s a common problem – one that many people spend years contending with.

The good news? Nubi can help! Read on as we talk through nine steps that will soon have you achieving hair that looks beautifully smooth and frizz-free.

1) Start With a New Frizz-Fighting Haircut

Let’s start with your haircut. What’s wrong with it? Firstly, split ends. If you haven’t had a trim in a while, then there’s a good chance that the ends of your hair have started to fray. Sure, this only affects the tips at first but it doesn’t take long for the rest of that strand to start unravelling. The more this happens, the frizzier your hair will look.

While you’re at the salon, speak to your stylist about any changes that could possibly be made to your haircut to give you a more frizz-free finish. For example, if you live somewhere humid, a haircut with blunt lines will help to add weight to your locks. This will help to encourage any frizzy strands to lie flat.

2) Keep it Cool When Washing Your Locks

Do you wash your hair with hot water? If so, this could be one of the reasons behind your frizz.

Hot water affects the hair in a few different ways. Firstly, it melts away the sebum produced by the scalp. This sebum is responsible for keeping your strands naturally conditioned. Without enough of it, dryness won’t be far behind, which only worsens frizz.

Hot water also causes the hair cuticles to lift. This causes the hair to lose moisture from within at a much faster rate. Coupled with how hot water weakens hair roots and promotes brittleness, you can see why it may be worth changing your showering habits!

Although it may not feel quite as satisfying at the end of a long day, try turning the temperature down to lukewarm when you’re showering. Not only will this help you to achieve your frizz-free goals but it will also do wonders for your complexion!

3) Learn the Secrets Behind Frizz-Free Blow Drying

The Blow Me Away Hairdryer

Blow drying can be a great way to achieve a smooth and frizz-free finish. However, make even the smallest of mistakes and the opposite could occur – you’ll end up with more frizz than ever!

So, what’s the secret to achieving salon-worthy sleekness with no frizz to be seen?

Firstly, use a blow dryer with a concentrator, like the Nubi Blow Me Away hair dryer. The two concentrators that come with this model will allow you to focus the flow of air downward as you blow dry. This will encourage your hair cuticles to lie flat, giving you a frizz-free finish.

Pay attention to the brush that you use when blow drying too. Boar bristle brushes are great for distributing sebum through the hair. This will give your hair some extra shine while also reducing frizz. Paddle brushes can be useful too, thanks to how they reduce static.

4) Don’t Dry Out Your Hair With a Harsh Shampoo

One of the reasons behind frizz is dryness. When the hair lacks moisture, it ends up lifting up and reaching out to grab a little of the moisture that’s in the air around you, resulting in frizz. Keeping your strands quenched will go a long way in preventing this.

We’ll soon explain how to do just that but, before you work on hydrating your hair, you need to make sure that you’re not unintentionally dehydrating it at the same time. Certain shampoos are notorious for doing this, making it vital that you’re careful with your choice of hair care products.

Instead of reaching for a shampoo solely because it claims to help with frizz, take a close look at its ingredient list. Make sure that it contains plenty of conditioning ingredients and no ingredients that are known for drying out the hair.

5) Condition…and Then Condition Again

When it comes to restoring moisture to your locks, a conditioner is everything. This is a step that you always need to follow after shampooing your hair. At this point, once your shampoo has removed your hair’s excess sebum, it will be crying out for some additional moisture, and this is what a conditioner provides.

With that said, a single application of conditioner after you wash your hair likely won’t be enough to give you the frizz-free mane you’re hoping for. Instead, you’ll need to go the extra mile. How? By also applying a leave-in conditioner once you’re out of the shower. Generously slather this onto the ends of damp hair, as this is when your hair is most permeable. It will go a long way in keeping the appearance of frizz at bay!

6) Shield Your Strands From Heat

Heat damage can quickly cause the hair to turn dry, brittle, and frizzy. However, giving up heat styling is something that people with frizzy hair often don’t want to do. Sometimes, it’s the best way to temporarily de-frizz those fluffy strands!

The good news is that you can keep heat-styling your locks, so long as you use some sort of heat protectant first. This should ideally be applied while your hair is still damp. This way, it will quickly soak into your locks and form a protective layer over the surface of each strand. Then, when you apply heat to your hair, any burning that takes place will affect this outer layer of heat protectant, rather than your hair itself.

What sort of heat protectant should you use? If your frizz is due to dryness, pick a formula that will hydrate and moisturize at the same time, such as a heat protectant cream. If you’d prefer something lighter, a spray or a serum would work well too.

7) Smooth Your Hair Down With a Hot Brush

Looking for a way to quickly smooth down the outer layer of frizz that’s surrounding your hair? A hot brush could be just what you need!

These heated styling tools look just like a regular hairbrush. However, plug them in and their surface will heat up. As you run the brush through your locks, the heat will encourage those fluffy strands to lie flat. This will leave your hair looking noticeably smoother in no time at all.

If you don’t already have a hot brush that you can turn to, check out the Simply Sleek Brush from Nubi. There are five adjustable temperatures to choose from, enabling you to heat style your frizzy strands without having to worry about exposing them to excessive heat and causing heat damage. The infrared heat that it uses coupled with its negative ion technology will also help to produce a frizz-free finish.

8) Cut Back on Friction

The more friction your hair is exposed to, the frizzier it will look. Why? Because friction prevents your hair cuticles from lying flat and smooth.

So, what causes friction?

A few things. Firstly, towel drying your hair. Rough up your wet strands with a towel and you’ll only be inviting in plenty of frizz before you’ve even started styling your hair. What should you do instead? Firstly, switch to a microfiber towel. They’re much softer, as well as more absorbent. You’ll be able to towel dry your hair so much faster.

Even with a microfiber towel, don’t scrub your wet strands. Instead, use your towel to gently wring out and soak up excess moisture. Work in small sections and you’ll be done in no time.

Your pillowcase is something else that can lead to friction and frizz. Each time your hair rubs against your pillow at night, your strands will be exposed to friction. How can you avoid this? By swapping to a silk or satin pillowcase. These materials are so much smoother. Rather than roughing up your hair, they’ll allow your strands to glide smoothly over. As an added bonus, they also won’t absorb quite as much moisture from your hair as, say, cotton. As you know, a lack of moisture can lead to frizz, making this a very effective way to achieve sleeker-looking locks.

9) Define Your Curls

Do you have curly hair? If so, you’ll understand that each strand of hair on your head will have its own geometric curl pattern. If these curl patterns are working against each other, you’ll be much more likely to notice frizz. On the other hand, manipulate your curls to encourage them all to coil in a uniform way and you’ll soon start to see your hair looking frizz-free.

How can you manipulate your curls? Sometimes, simply using your fingers or a comb will be enough. However, if your locks are particularly stubborn, you may need some extra help. This is where the right heated styling tool can be a game-changer.

For some, this means turning to a curling wand, like the Sleek Curl Clipless Wand from Nubi. Treat yourself to The Set Up package and you’ll be able to enjoy the wand as well as the hot brush we featured earlier.

A flat iron can also work well, so long as you use it to define your curls rather than flatten them. Pick a model that isn’t going to leave your hair susceptible to heat damage, like the Soft N’ Straight 1.25” Ceramic Purple Styler from Nubi. Again, it comes with an adjustable temperature dial, infrared heat, and negative ion technology. It also boasts ceramic plates, which are known for being one of the best materials for heat styling with minimal frizz.
